Bowls are one of the most difficult things to photograph, especially shiny bowls. I think this is a pretty good representation of what I am trying to do with a bowl which is to leave every aspect of the bowl considered. The foot, the rim, the complete surface.....all attended to by my consciousness, all considered and responded to. I arrived at an inflection point many years ago. I remember the moment like it happened today, although years in the past. In that moment I realized that to make a functional pot rise above the essential function into the dimension of art and creative expression, I needed to give every single aspect my complete awareness and attention.
So, do I ever tire of make one more bowl, one more of cup after making 10's of thousands of cups? No way. Why? Because every movement, every detail gets my very best effort, my consciousness, my attention. So every moment is fresh and new when working with clay; firing a kiln, mixing clay, cutting a facet or groove into the surface is new, exciting and powerful. And that power flows directly from my heart through my hand, into the clay.
